1. It’s competitive

There are more than 7.3 million student-athletes. Fewer than 7% of the nation’s athletes will play at a college level, and just 2.04% will receive any athletic funding.

2. Scholarships aren’t available to every student-athlete

They are available only for student-athletes who meet the NCAA or NAIA’s minimum standards for academic achievement, and in many cases, more rigid standards established by individual schools. The NCAA has a required 16 core courses for student-athletes wishing to play, while the NAIA has their own standards. Click here to read them.

3. Scholarships aren’t guaranteed

Athletic scholarships are awarded one year at a time, and are renewed each year at a coach’s discretion.

4. Not every scholarship is a “full ride”

A full ride normally covers tuition, books, room, board, and associated feed, but not all sports offer full rides. Sports that receive a full-ride are considered Head Count sports. These include: M/W Basketball, Football (D1 A), W. Gymnastics, W. Tennis, W. Volleyball.

The other type are Equivalency sports. The include: Baseball, Cross Country/Track, Field Hockey, Football (except Division 1A) golf, M. Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, M. Swimming, M. Tennis, M. Volleyball, Wrestling. These scholarships are divvied up among the players. A player in these sports may receive as little as $2,000.

5. The average scholarship is $10,409

NCAA Division I and II statistics reported that the average scholarship to be valued at $10,409. Most packages are a combination of athletic scholarships and need and non-need-bases grants-in-aid.

6. Some of the best scholarship packages come from Division III programs

Technically, Division III programs do not offer athletic scholarships, but they do offer academic scholarships. These smaller private schools give merit grants and other scholarships for student accomplishments. Be sure to keep all your options open when you consider your school and you may receive more financial aid as a result.

7. Four Year Full Ride Athletic Scholarships are a Myth

Contrary to what parents and high school athletes believe, guaranteed four year full ride scholarships are a myth. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) stipulates that athletic scholarships are good for one year at a time and are potentially renewable at the coach’s discretion. Coaches that promise full ride 4 year scholarships are not telling the truth. In addition, if an athlete is injured the athlete may lose their scholarship.

8. You Don’t Need to Hire a Professional Videographer to Capture Your Highlights

Save your money and upload your athletic highlights to YouTube. Coaches don’t want to search through DVDs of recruits when they can simply go online and see the latest clips of an athlete on YouTube.

9. College Coaches Send Out Hundreds of Recruiting Letters

Although getting a letter from a college coach can be very exciting and encouraging, aspiring athletes need to keep in mind that coaches send out hundreds of letters like this every year. If a student doesn’t have the necessary grades, they will be dropped from the coach’s list. In addition, if your athlete is interested in a particular college that has seen them play either in person or via YouTube, they should ask the coach for an honest assessment of the athlete’s chances of making their team. “If you don’t get a straight answer, that should tell you something,”.

10. What percentage of NCAA student-athletes go pro?

Education is important. There are more than 400,000 NCAA student-athletes, and most of them go pro in something other than sports. The following are the percentage of NCAA student-athletes who become professional athletes in specific sports:

Baseball – 11.6%

Men’s ice hockey – 1.3%

Football – 1.7%

Men’s soccer – 1.0%

Men’s basketball – 1.2%

Women’s basketball – 0.9%

Interesting view as these drinks are considered dietary supplements by the FDA. This explains why there aren't enough tests for determining the long term health effects of these types of products.

So the college admissions process begins, however, I strongly recommend that the athlete answer the following questions before scheduling any future visits.

Where do you want to go to school geographically (Does the student need to be close to home or independent enough to be on their own)

Small, medium or large learning environment? (Average Classroom size?)

Can the student make the grade? (Academic capabilities based on test scores and transcript)

What;s your major? (identify the program your student wants to pursue)

Athletic and/or academic monies available?

So where does Seton Hall University fit in the selection process? Seton Hall University was founded in 1856 by bishop James Roosevelt Bayley. Seton Hall is a Catholic University and is the oldest U.S. diocesan university, under the Archdiocese of Newark. Seton Hall is located in South Orange, New Jersey, suburban setting 30 minutes from NYC.

The university is known for its programs in business, law, education, nursing, and diplomacy. Seton Hall is made up of eight different schools and colleges with an undergraduate enrollment of about 5,200 students with an average class size of 21 students. The Freshman unweighted GPA average is 3.4 with an average SAT of 1100 and an ACT average of 24. Seton Hall has a graduate enrollment of about 4,400. Its School of Law, which is ranked by US News & World Report as one of the top 100 law schools in the nation, has an enrollment of about 1,200 students. Seton Hall’s Stillman School of Business has also been continually ranked as one of the top 100 undergraduate business schools in the nation according to Business Week.

Seton Hall has 14 NCAA Division I Varsity Sports and participate in the Big East Conference. Athletic scholarships are available.
